Here are two flag recipe ceremonies from the Girl Scouts of
DuPage County Council in Naperville Illinois.
We did the ceremony at a compout last year, I combined parts
of both ceremonies. I just picked the parts I liked best!
Ceremonies for the American Flag
Flag Recipe #1
Ingredients: 1 Large pot
1 American Flag folded in pot
1 cup each: rec, white, blue poker chips
Gold & Silver stars
Mixing spoon
1 Candle each: red, white blue (optional)
6 to 9 girls
Girl #1: We are going to fix for you a treat that is really
grand, and make for you a recipe - the greatest in the
land.
Girl #2: In first we will put a heaping cup of red for courage
true.
Girl #3: And then we will add for loyalty a dash of heavenly
blue.
Girl #4: For purity, we will now sift in a layer of snowy white.
Girl #5: We will sprinkle in a pinch of stars to make it come
out right.
Girl#6: We will stir and stir and then you will see what we
have made is .... (here all six girls say "Old Glory" as
two of them reach in and take flag from the bottom of pot
and hold it above the pot for the pledge).
(Optional)
Girl #7: Likewise the candles displayed here stand for the
tri-color of our country's flag.
As the red candle is lighted, let us pledge ourselves
to have courage to defend our country's honor;
Girl #8: As the white candle is lighted, let us pledge ourselves
to seek purity of dedication to LIVE the Girl Scout
Promise and Laws each day of our lives;
Girl #9: As the blue candle is lighted, let us pledge ourselves
to loyally uphold the Constitution of these United
States, and respect the rights of our fellow Americans
regardless of race, color, or creed!
All Girls: Our flag is the most beautiful flag in the world,
let us always be loyal to it. Please join us in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
Flag Recipe #2
Materials needed:
Large pot with American flag folded and placed inside.
Large wooded spoon
Strips of red, white and blue ribbon
3-5 white stars
Copies of ceremony
6 girls to be narrators
Script:
Girl #1: Our flag has changed many times over the past two
hundred years; however, the 13 stripes have remained to
represent the 13 original colonies.
Girl #2: The red stripes are for courage. (Put red ribbons in
pot).
Girl #3: The white stripes are for a clean and honest living.
(Put white ribbons on pot).
Girl #4: The blue in our flag is for truth and loyalty. (Put
blue ribbon in pot).
Girl #5: The stars mean opportunity and hope. (Put stars in
pot).
Girl #6: (Stirs pot with spoon).
All together the add up to what we want our country to
be. Ladies and Gentlemen ......... THE FLAG OR OUR
COUNTRY.
(Takes out flag so that ribbons and stars either stay
in or fly out (your choice)).
Ideas for rest of ceremony:
Everyone might say the Pledge of Allegiance while
narrator continues to hold up flag. (If flag is large it
would be best to have one girl at each top corner).
A song such as "America the Beautiful" or "This land is
Your Land", could be sung.
At the end of the ceremony the flag should be carefully folded
and carried out by one of the narrators.
